Florida is going crazy after the announcement that Gators coach Urban Meyer was resigning. Sad day in Gainseville -- and on ESPN.
When news hit that University of Florida football coach Urban Meyer was resigning due to health concerns, the whirlwind was imminent. After it was announced live during the North Carolina-Pittsburgh bowl game, Gatorzone, the official site of the Florida Gators, went down.
First thought: It’s going to be one of those bowl weeks.
We can’t get through a bowl season without at least three coaches making some absolutely ridiculous move at the worst time possible. (And always in the middle of the night to the dismay of this newsman.)
However, this move has a huge exception. That being Meyer is concerned for his health. And on a secondary level, he has to be there for his family.
But in the wake of titanic getting rocked, we’re seeing the seismic waves all over the coaching community. Right now, the analysts and the “experts” are all tossing names into hats, wondering aloud who will take the reigns of one of the top programs in the country.
Who will be the head ball coach?
No Tim Tebow. No Urban Meyer. No championship.
There’s two things we can take away from this:
- We’re going to hear about this incessantly for at least two weeks or until Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley hires the newbie (which will start a new cycle). The media just don’t like change.
- The next guy in the hot seat will not be a rookie. And unlike Notre Dame’s new coach, he’ll actually have a chance to win with the program in place.
The Sugar Bowl just got its hype — on pills.
